Dandruff is a scalp condition that causes the skin to be flaky. Growing dandruff can be a nuisance to handle and sometimes they can also be very embarrassing and not easy to treat. The good news is that they can be treated medically or even through some home remedies. But as the wise men said, prevention is better than cure. It is, therefore, important to know the causes of dandruff before learning how to get rid of dandruff.
Eight Causes of Dandruff and Dry Scalp
The yeast-like fungus (malassezzia) lives of most adults scalps and some find it quite irritating. Malassezia feeds on the oils the hair follicles secrete and can grow out of control. People sensitive to yeast have a slightly higher risk of getting dandruff. The irritation of growing dandruff causes more skin cells to grow. The excess skin cells later die and fall off appearing flaky and white on your hair and even on your clothes. Some of the yeast sensitive people find that it gets better during the warmer weather and worse during the cold weather as the skin is dry due to the cold.
2) Dry skin
One of the most frequent causes of growing dandruff is dry skin. The cold weather air combined with some overheated rooms can easily result in itchiness and flaky skin. However, dandruff flakes from dry skin tend to be generally small and not oily unlike the ones caused by other causes of dandruff.
3) Irritated and oily skin (Seborrheic dermatitis)
People with irritating oily skin are more prone to dandruff. This condition, Seborrheic dermatitis affects many different parts of the skin that are rich in oil glands other than the scalp. They include the breastbone, sides of the nose, the groin area, back of the ears, sometimes the armpits, and finally the eyebrows. The condition is identifiable by red, greasy skin coated with flaky white or yellow scales.
4) Sensitivity to hair and skin products
This is also referred to as contact dermatitis and its also one of the most common causes of growing dandruff. Some people may be sensitive to some skin and hair products and especially paraphenylenediamine which can cause red, itchy and flakey/ Scaly scalp. Using too many styling products and shampooing too often may irritate your scalp and cause dandruff.
5) Other skin conditions and some illnesses
People with some skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema, are likely to experience dandruff. Adults with diseases like the Parkinson’s disease and other neurological illnesses are more vulnerable to having seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff. Patients recovering from strokes and heart attacks not forgetting those people with weak immune systems, frequently have dandruff more than other people.
6) Not shampooing enough
If you do not wash and shampoo your hair regularly, your hair, skin cells, and oils can easily build up causing dandruff. However, be cautious not to overdo it as it can also cause dandruff.
Poor dieting is among the top causes of growing dandruff. You are what you eat and most of the illnesses and conditions are brought about if you do not watch your diet. If you do not eat enough foods that have Vitamin B, Zinc, and some other types of fat you will be more likely to have dandruff.
8) Mental stress and HIV/AIDS
A lot of skin conditions have been related to mental stress. As you keep your body healthy through workouts and healthy eating, be sure to also take care of your mental health to avoid skin conditions such as growing dandruff among others. Research has shown that people with HIV/AIDS have seborrheic dermatitis.
